Allen Tucker
(American 1866-1939)

In the early twentieth century Allen Tucker gained the reputation as "America's Van Gogh". His use of vibrant colors and expressive brushwork won the artist popularity with both collectors and critics. Early in his career, Tucker studied under master Impressionist John Twachtman, and developed a close friendship and respect for the older artist. Tucker was a founder of the Association of American Painters and Sculptors, the organizing group for 1913's famous Armory Show (in which Tucker exhibited five works). He also exhibited with the Society of Independent artists, becoming the organizations director a few years later, and taught in the 1920's at the Art Students League. In 1931 he authored a book on Twachtman's art. Our collection of ten works by the artist was a gift from Tucker to an American expatriate woman who lived in Switzerland in the 1920's and 30's. The collection includes eight works on paper and two oils. The 1906 oil "The Cabin" is an important and exemplary early example by Tucker. "Afternoon Tea" depicts the woman who received this collection as a gift. The seven watercolors and one pastel, most of which were never framed, retain their brilliant colors and survive in excellent condition. We are pleased to offer this significant collection of works by Allen Tucker to the marketplace for the first time.
