.In his monograph for the Whitney Museum’s 1967 Marca-Relli
retrospective, author William Agee mentions the artist’s return to paint
and canvas for the materials of his collages. The dynamic gestural
brushwork of Untitled (1965) points towards earlier periods in the
artist’s career, when his collages “took on a trembling and convulsed
motion” and the “figure is flattened against the picture plane in a
frontal and hieratic pose.” As a first generation Abstract
Expressionist, Marca-Relli holds an important place in the art of the
1950’s and 60’s. His contribution and commitment to collage was well
noted in art historical circles, and the result was the artist’s
inclusion, through contemporary purchases, in the permanent collections
of many of the country’s most prestigious institutions. This list
includes the Art Institute of Chicago, the Carnegie Institute, the
Cleveland Museum of Art, the Detroit Institute of Arts, The Metropolitan
Museum of Art, the Museum of Modern Art, the National Gallery, the
Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Art, the San Francisco Museum of Art, the
Guggenheim Museum, and the Whitney Museum of American Art. rcester Art
