„ Abstract Expressionist Goldberg attended the Art Students League from
1938 to 1942. In the 1950’s he studied for two years with Hans Hoffman,
although Willem de Kooning became his primary influence. Of Goldberg
Robert Rosenblum wrote: “He dared to master the wildest fringe of
Abstract Expressionist spontaneity, turning the canvas into a nearly
literal illustration of Harold Rosenberg’s famous metaphor of the canvas
as an arena of action.” The artist’s association with legendary dealer
Martha Jackson began in 1960 with the first of four one-man shows at her
gallery. This work was exhibited at that exhibition and epitomizes the
synthesis of structure and gesture which is the hallmark of Abstract
Expressionism. Goldberg’s intimately scaled paintings have a
surprisingly potent visual impact.
