Girl with Doll (1905)

Oil on wood panel, 15" x 10", signed lower left and dated 1905.

William Wallace Gilchrist, an Impressionist painter of landscapes, genre scenes, interiors, and an accomplished portrait painter, grew up in Pennsylvania. In his youth he spent summers on the Maine coast at Prout's Neck where he knew Winslow Homer and was one of the few artists to receive friendly criticism from the artist. Though his career was cut short due to an early death, Gilchrist achieved both success and acclaim for his extraordinary work. "Girl with Doll" (1905) is an exceptional example of the artist's work, and probably depicts his daughter Nelly.
