SOLD "Fly-Fishing Gear" (c.1945)

Oil on board, 24 " x 18 " Signed lower right. Atherton's fishing still life work fits into the "Magic Realism" category (he exhibited in MOMA's 1943 show of realism and magic realism). The artist was a legend in the fly-fishing, fly-tying and fly-fishing literature worlds. In addition to writing and illustrating the classic book "The Fly and The Fish", the artist was an innovative fly-tyer. He died in a drowning accident at age 52 while fishing.
